Winchester ABC is looking for a Resident Academic Coordinator to reside in the ABC House in Winchester, MA town center.  The Resident Academic Coordinator's primary responsibility is the academic development of eight talented high school students of color, who have been selected from urban schools following a rigorous application process.  The Academic Coordinator should be familiar with the demands and performance required in an academically challenging high school and should be able to help the Scholars meet these expectations.   The position runs through the academic year and can be held with a compatible other job or program of study.  Room, board, and a small stipend are provided.  The Resident Academic Coordinator must be available at the ABC House Sunday-Thursday 6 to 10 PM for family style dinner and scholar study hours, and coordinate his/her schedule with Resident Director(s) to provide coverage in the house in the afternoons and weekends.

The Resident Academic Coordinator:

  • Supervises and supports Scholars during study hours, to ensure that Scholars are completing all homework assignments on time and are adequately prepared for tests and quizzes.
  • Coordinates in-house tutoring program.
  • Teaches Scholars good organizational and study skills.
  • Serves as resource for the Scholars on academic issues.
  • Acts as liaison with administrative staff and teachers at Winchester High School.
  • Analyses course load of each Scholar to make sure it is appropriate.
  • Monitors progress and reviews report cards with Resident Director(s) and Scholars quarterly. 
  • Provides written review of each Scholar’s quarterly academic progress to the Board of Directors, Parents, and Host Families.
  • Meets with guidance counselors and teachers as appropriate.
  • Participates in the college application process, and is responsible for coordinating the taking of PSATs and SATs.
  • Is a positive presence in the house and participates in some evening and weekend social events.
  • Coordinates schedule with Resident Director(s) to provide coverage in the house in the afternoons and evenings.
  • Ensures that Scholars get to school on time.
  • Assists Resident Director(s) in supervising household duties.
  • Maintains a good relationship and balance of authority with the Resident Director(s).

The Resident Academic Coordinator should possess the following minimum qualifications:

Mature, responsible, and flexible individual with BA/BS, strong interpersonal skills, experience tutoring or teaching adolescents, and expertise in at least two major academic subjects.   The ideal candidate is willing to be a positive, visible presence in the ABC house, and have background that substantiates his/her ability to deal with multiple constituencies effectively, since the Resident Academic Coordinator is required to interact with school, ABC Board, Host Parents, volunteers, and a multitude of others that support the ABC Scholars during their Winchester ABC experience.
