Interview Days: In the Words of our Volunteers

Katerina and Alejandra Melnyk: Fifth grade student applicants in attendance at the Washington D.C. Interview Day.
An A Better Chance volunteer interviews one of over 700 student applicants during the New York City Interview Days.

As of January 31, 2011, A Better Chance received a record number of applications from students all over the country – a total of 2,658 (a 15% increase from the previous year). During November and December, over 300 volunteers composed of A Better Chance Scholars, Alumni, Parents, donors, Member School affiliates and friends of the organization, dedicated a portion of their weekend to help us interview hundreds of bright, promising students.

Here are a few impressions of our volunteers in their own words:

“It was my pleasure meeting the President and the rest of the A Better Chance team. Most of all I was truly impressed with all of the students I interviewed and sincerely hope each gets into his or her school of choice.”
– Carlos Dennis (Friend)

“I am very pleased to…have had the opportunity to participate in the interviews as well as speak to several of the proud parents. The students are really the cream of the crop. As an [A Better Chance] alum, I found it exciting talking to intelligent, mature, focused youth all of about 13 years of age who are the upcoming leaders of our world.”
– Vaughan Edwards (Carmel A Better Chance, ’74)

“It was a joy and privilege to interview these students. I learned so much from them and I hope many of them will get to enjoy the opportunity to experience a higher education, in the true sense of those words, as I did as an [A Better Chance] alum. I look forward to many more…”
– Julianna Morgan (Emma Willard School, ’90)
