Better Chance

Johnathan Gibson (New York, NY)

As a student, Johnathan was an A Better Chance Scholar attending one of our Community School Programs – Strath Haven. After Strath Haven, Johnathan attended the University of Virginia where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. Upon graduating college, Johnathan first worked in the for-profit arena. However, because he knew firsthand how access and education can change the trajectory of a child’s life, Johnathan decided to take a job as Resident Director for Wilton A Better Chance. During his 6 years at Wilton, Johnathan was responsible for the supervision of the Scholars in residence as well as the daily operation of the program. Further, at the request of other programs, Johnathan often led training sessions for new Resident Directors to help equip them in their new roles. While employed as Resident Director, Johnathan was simultaneously employed at West Rocks Middle School as a permanent substitute teacher for grade 8 Math and Science. As a teacher at West Rocks, Johnathan co-founded an innovative year-round incentive program for at-risk youth as an alternative to suspension. Prior to joining A Better Chance, Johnathan spent the last three years at REACH Prep, Inc. as Director of Admissions and Placement. At REACH Prep, Johnathan was responsible for developing and reviewing academic, social, and co-curricular standards for admission to the program.
