The Radnor Chapter of A Better Chance (ABC), a nationwide program providing educational opportunities for talented students of color, is seeking 1 male and 2 female Resident Tutor/Mentors for the upcoming academic year (2012- 2013).

For the 2012-2013 school year, our program will have 6 students, 3 resident tutors (2 female and 1 male) and 1 resident director. This position provides a private room, board and a stipend for 10 months, in exchange for part-time hours.

Tutor/Mentors will be on-duty and will assume “in-charge” responsibilities 2 nights per week and one weekend per month, during which time they will supervise study hall, tutor students, participate in weekday dinners and take responsibility for fostering a family-like atmosphere in the house.

The Tutor/Mentors are expected to maintain an appropriate standard of behavior, demonstrating a respect for the integrity of each Scholar and staff member, as well as a concern for the overall welfare of the program.

Qualifications
• College degree or matriculation in college/university or graduate program
• Strong tutoring skills
• Experience working with teenagers
• Maturity, ability to enforce rules
• Good interpersonal skills
• Driver’s license and car ownership required
• Must commit to the academic school year (September through June)

Compensation:
All Resident Tutors/Mentors are provided with room and board and a nominal monthly stipend for the 10 months school is in session.

Responsibilities:
-Assume “in-charge” responsibilities 2 nights per week, from 6 PM-7:30 AM, and one weekend per month, including chore assignments, sign-out procedures and curfew/lights-out policies.
-In the event of an emergency, tutors must show willingness to fill in for assigned tutor on duty. (Resident Director must always be informed the moment that schedule/assignment changes need to take place.)
-When on duty, Tutor/Mentors must eat dinner with the scholars and assist with informal weekend dinners.
-Ensure Scholars abide by provisions of the Student Handbook.
-Ensure Scholars are completing all homework on time and adequately preparing for tests and quizzes.
-Tutor/assist Scholars with their studies.
-Assist Scholars in learning good organizational, planning and study skills.
-Maintain good relationship and balance of authority with Resident Director(s) and other Tutor/Mentors.
-Keep Resident Director(s) and Academic Advisory Committee informed of Scholars’ progress and any potential problems.
-May need to assume responsibilities, in an emergency, in the event the Resident Director(s) is/are not available.
-Maintain an appropriate standard of behavior and be a positive role model, demonstrate integrity, lead the Scholars and provide support as needed
-Create a welcoming and supportive atmosphere.
-Show interest in the student’s extracurricular activities and interests by attending plays, sporting events, school functions, etc., when possible.
-Attend and assist in house events and activities, when needed.
-Provide rides for students (as needed) for activities, medical appointments/emergencies.
-Attend weekly house meetings with scholars and Resident Director.
-Attend weekly staff meetings with Resident Director.
