Scholar Receives a Special College Admissions Surprise
|Scholar Frank Hernandez (The Thacher School, 2013), receives a hand-delivered admissions letter from his first choice school, Occidental College
In December, Scholar Frank Hernandez (The Thacher School, 2013) sat with his school counselor in her office, discussing his plans and options for college. Frank had applied early decision to Occidental College in Los Angeles, and would know whether he was accepted in just three days. Still, his guidance counselor requested Frank come in to discuss a plan B. But they never got that far, as a knock on the door interrupted them.
When he opened the door, Frank was greeted by Oswald the Tiger, the mascot of Occidental College. Oswald, along with two of Occidental College’s admissions counselors, had surprised Frank with a hand-delivered acceptance letter.
“The Occidental mascot was the last thing I was expecting at the door. I knew that the Occidental mascot was the tiger, but it never occurred to me when I saw it there at the door,” Frank said. “When the representatives from Oxy told me I was admitted, I felt shock. It quickly moved aside for the feeling of excitement.” Frank hopes to major in kinesiology and looks forward to becoming a part of the close-knit community at Occidental College.
He credits A Better Chance in helping him receive a top-notch education and realize his potential.
“Without A Better Chance, I would not have attended a private high school. Thacher has been a blessing for me and my family, and this was all possible because of A Better Chance. I am the first in my entire family to have the opportunity to attend a private college. Through A Better Chance, I have opened doors for my family with hopes of a higher education. “
