For over 50 years A Better Chance has enabled youth of color to access a superior education. What started 50 years ago as a partnership with 16 preparatory schools has successfully grown into a national organization with over 300 Member School partners across the country. As we begin to plan for the next fifty years, continued expansion of our programs and deepening our impact is at the core of our plan.
As part of our transformative plan for growth, we have set a number of milestones for us to reach by 2020, including:
- Increase the number of youth served through our programs annually by 75% (from 2,000 to 3,500 Scholars)
- Add approximately 250 Member Schools across the country to create greater opportunities for students
Our Member School partners have enabled our success and continue to help us make our vision become reality.
Hear what Member Schools are saying about the value and impact of A better Chance's programming:
“Working with A Better Chance –for both the family and the school –is a wonderful experience. Scholars are given strong support and guidance throughout their time at Member Schools and as they prepare for the college experience and beyond. The Scholars stay connected to the program through their regional program managers and through the work they continue to do on behalf of their school and A Better Chance. The students are equipped for the joys and challenges that await them.”

“The A Better Chance Program has deeply impacted students and families over the last fifty years. Students' middle and high school experiences in day, boarding or community schools have been life-changing, as evidenced by the large number of Alumnae and Alumni of A Better Chance who have graduated from colleges and universities all over the country and gone on to lead productive lives in a wide range of fields. Having met some of them while volunteering during interview day, they have expressed how thankful they are for the opportunities that A Better Chance afforded them and now are giving back to this wonderful organization.”

“A Better Chance empowers students of color from throughout the country to learn and obtain the best educational opportunities by serving as the trusted mentor and liaison for students and parents navigating a foreign independent school application process. For schools such as Phillips Academy, A Better Chance enables independent schools to reach further in their diversity recruitment efforts racially, ethnically, and geographically. The diversity A Better Chance helps bring to partner independent schools makes each school community richer in perspective and personality.”

“A Better Chance is equally impactful on the lives of its Scholars as well as its member schools. Students are not simply granted admission at some of the strongest schools in the country, but they are supported by A Better Chance through workshops and retreats both before and after they are placed. Every year, A Better Chance refers applicants to us that would not otherwise make a connection with our school. Over the years, we have had over 70 ABC graduates and almost 20 more are currently enrolled in our school. The impact of A Better Chance on College Prep has been nothing short of tremendous. It extends our reach and broadens our community in many mission-critical ways. It is the most important relationship we have with any outside organization."

“A Better Chance brings strong students of color from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds to St. Andrew's. We value our relationship with A Better Chance and respect the work A Better Chance does to match strong students of color with strong educational opportunities and carry through a partnership of support with our school and the student, throughout the students career at St. Andrew's and beyond.”

“A Better Chance's greatest value and impact is that it remains focused on supporting students of color through education; knowing that it is the best tool for social and economic mobility in our society. The network of Alumni has grown and multiplied over the last 50 years spawning a connected community that champions this cause on the regional and national level. As an Admissions Director, A Better Chance serves a vital role in connecting me with families in our community that I may not be able to capture using my traditional marketing tools.”
