Students selected for referral must:

• Identify themselves as students of color
• Be citizens or permanent residents of the United States
• Be in school grades 5-10 (applying for the following school year)

In addition, students selected for referral usually:

• Consistently perform at or above grade level in math and English
• Have an overall academic average of a B+ or better
• Rank in the top ten percent of their class
• Participate in extracurricular activities both within and outside of the school community
• Demonstrate leadership potential either in school or through activities outside of school
• Receive good teacher recommendations
• Are of upstanding character
