The 2010 A Better Chance Awards Luncheon took place on May 13, 2010 at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City, where we honored leaders in our community who have demonstrated a commitment to promoting diversity and excellence. This year, Clarence Otis, Jr. Chairman and CEO of Darden Restaurants was awarded the Chairman’s Award, and Dr. Amy Gutmann, President of the University of Pennsylvania was given the Benjamin E. Mays Award. Both individuals have made remarkable strides in the world of business and education.
The over 450 attendees at the luncheon also recognized a group of exceptional 2010 A Better Chance Scholars from around the country. These Scholars ranging from grades 6-12 were awarded for their academic excellence, leadership within their school community, and steadfast determination to succeed.
A Better Chance would like to thank our Valedictorian sponsors, Clarence Otis, Jr., Darden Restaurants and The PrinceRidge Group LLC, for their generous support; Alumna Bertha Coombs (Milton Academy, ’80) for hosting the Awards; and the guests of the event, who together helped us raise much-needed funds that will go towards providing talented youth of color with the opportunities of an excellent education.
