Testing FAQ
How do I register for your administration of the test? There is no option for it on the form!
In the location section, simply write ‘A Better Chance’ with the test date. There is not an option for it on the form because those forms are distributed nationally, whereas our administration of the test is only for A Better Chance applicants. When you send your form to us, it will not pass through a machine; we will process each registration form individually in our office.
Where and when are your tests administered?
Once you are registered, you will be notified of the exact time and location. We can help you change your registration date if it becomes impossible for your student to attend the seating for the exam. In California contact the regional Program Coordinator.
How do I know which test to take?
The Regional Testing Information Sheet included with your application packet gives information specific to your area, so it is always safe to refer to it. In general though, if you want to apply for a boarding school, you should take the SSAT (except in Georgia). If you want to apply for a day school, you can take the ISEE, but day schools tend to be very competitive, so you should weigh that when considering your options.
Who do I send the testing registration form to?
If you are taking the test with us, send the form in with Section 1 of your application. Include a check made out to the testing board (either the ISEE or SSAT) with your registration. If you are taking the test at one of the nationally administered times, you send your registration and payment directly to the testing board.
In California contact your regional Program Coordinator.
How can I get more testing booklets?
Copies of the test information booklets can be obtained from the testing agencies directly at:
ISEE: www.iseetest.org 800-446-0320
SSAT: www.ssat.org 609-683-4440
How do I get a fee waiver for testing?
A fee waiver is only available to families with demonstrated need. To be considered for a fee waiver, we must receive the completed Section 1 of your application before the test registration deadline. Fee waiver requests must be submitted in writing with the ISEE or SSAT registration form before the test registration deadline.
Application FAQ
There is so much here! When is it all due?
Only those pages in Section 1 are due in October. All those in Section 2 are not due until November.
Interview FAQ
How do the interview days work?
Once we receive the completed Section 1 of your application, you will receive an invitation to attend an interview day. Interviews are not required but highly recommended. Interview days are the only opportunity to be interviewed – we do not do phone interviews or schedule alternate dates.
Information Sessions FAQ
How do I attend an information session?
If you would like to request an information session for your school or organization, please leave your name and contact information and one of our Program Coordinators will contact you.
If you would like to attend an information session in your area, leave your name, contact information and region, and we will advise you when we have an information session in your area.
Distribution FAQ
Who should I distribute applications to?
The students that we accept into our program are talented students of color – that is, they are African-American, Hispanic, Asian-American, Native American or biracial. They are usually in the top 10 percent of their class, with at least a B average. We only accept applications for grades 6 through 11. At the time of application, then, candidates must be in grades 5 though 10.
