How to Apply

The A Better Chance application is completed online and is available February 1. There are several components to the application which must all be submitted by April 15.

All information you provide on your application is kept confidential and will only be shared with Member Schools as part of the application process.

Application Form

Biographical information, school information, parent questionnaire, student short responses, student essay

Proof of Income

  • The first two pages of Form 1040 of your Federal Tax Return for the application year; employer-issued W2s; Form 1099 for Miscellaneous Income; Proof of government assistance
  • Pay stubs and bank statements are not accepted

Two Online Recommendations

These recommendations must be completed using the required A Better Chance recommendation forms – one from a current Math, English, History, Social Studies or Science teacher; the other from a current principal/counselor or another administrative representative at the school

Transcripts or Report Cards

An official digital or printed copy of report cards or transcript from the current school year (2018-2019) and previous school year (2017-2018). Transcripts cannot be camera images.

Photo

A recent photo of the applicant in which the head and shoulders are fully visible. School photos encouraged.

Benchmark Testing

A benchmark test is a previously-issued SSAT exam that is used to determine potential test scores on the actual test. Once an application is received, applicants will receive a follow-up email with instructions for registering for the test. The tests are administered by A Better Chance and usually take place in April and May. Applicants who live within 50 miles of a scheduled testing site are expected to sit for this exam.
